Like many of you, I absolutely love the movie, The Princess Bride. I am not a fan of "chick flix" (Confession: I have still not seen The Notebook from beginning to end), but, of course, The Princess Bride does have swords. Yet, there is something memorable about PB that keeps me going back to it again and again. One thing is so much wonderful dialogue.
For instance, when Vizzini (played by Wallace Shawn) keeps using the word, "inconceivable," in every situation, Imigo Montoya (played by Mandy Patinkin) has had enough. He finally tells Vizzini,
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Being clear on the meaning of words is absoultely critical when it comes to having honest conversation. This is why "verbal manipulation" is one of the foundational sins that Jesus speaks against.
Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. (Matthew 5:37)
In the coming days, I will post on several words that 'I do not think mean what you think it means…'
