The vast majority of people who support traditional marriage don’t “fear” same sex marriage; they simply don’t agree. It is intellectually dishonest to label them, “homophobic.”

I think people that label other people “homophobic” are desperate in meeting their needs. They use this word as an exaggeration to gain media attention. They only view society as either black or white. The fact that the state of CA voted in the most democratic (Christian) way the passage of Prop.8, people should respect and accept this decesion. Thank God for Prop.8′s passing. Thank God for His will and for His victory!
Agreed. But, it is just what we do as fallible human beings.
For instance, a Prop 8 supporter might be quick to call me “liberal” or “unChristian” for not supporting the proposition. And, that person might be close to half right.
“Phobic” is an extremely disparaging and emotionally charged term that is used to try to quell logical and reasonable debate before it starts. The, “I win by using hyperbole and then I don’t even have to think or defend my position” school. One of the worst examples of extremely disparaging and emotionally charged hyperbole I have ever seen is the T shirt, sign, and slogan chosen by opponents of Prop 8, “Stop Hate/ No on 8.”
This is one of the most illogical and self-defeating phrases I have ever seen in a mainstream political contest. It basically calls the vast majority of people around the world “hateful” because they don’t approve of cultural relativity as a standard for moral values. Now, how would the shoe fit on the other foot?
You see, this cultural relativity worldview, which is the majority filter of those who approve same sex marriage, is literally so “white, northern European Enlightenment” in values, that the proponents of “No on 8″ (the vast majority of who fall into the above mentioned category statistically, btw) could easily be called “racist,” “bigoted,” and “classist,” if the supporters of Prop 8 were so inclined. They weren’t so inclined. Extreme language is used by people who have extreme positions.
Certainly there are people of faith who opposed Prop 8 from carefully thought out legal ramifications, libertarians of good faith who opposed Prop 8 for government influence reasons, and people of good will who used emotional feelings to sway their thinking on Prop 8. Perhaps the majority of people who opposed Prop 8 are in one of those camps. But the “hate” and “phobic” language are extreme.
